Any tips for gay men travelling in Eastern Europe?

I am travelling from the U.S. to Eastern Europe, in Croatia, where my partner is from. We've managed an amazing but stressful 2 year relationship long distance. Now I must go see him in his home country for a while. Homophobia is rampant there, and I'm afraid I won't know how to cope with the constant fear of looking over my shoulder. I love him so much, but I'm so worried about having to defend myself if someone comes after us or throws something at us (or even tries to kill us). Is there anyone out there who can give me some tips on how to maintain this relationship in a homophobic hell?
