What are some good European cartoons?

After just seeing anime for the first time (melancholy of haruhi suzumiya and nichijou), I thought surely there must be some good cartoons from Europe as well, seeing how American and Japanese cartoons are so good. Does anyone have suggestions, preferrably something outside of England (I've already seen a couple british cartoons).
